SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION FOR INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION: IMPLEMENTATION RESOURCES

Publisher: The Construction Industry Institute, Austin, Texas
Implementation Resource: IR250-3
Length: 31 Pages

Publication Date: November 2009

Summary

Sustainable Design and Construction for Industrial Construction: Implementation Resources was prepared to help increase the understanding of sustainability by providing implementation resources for the following industrial sectors: manufacturing; mining, mineral and metals; pharmaceutical; petrochemical; pulp and paper; power; and utilities.

The four sustainable development implementation resources discussed could be used to help members of industrial firms evaluate the sustainability of their construction projects. The four implementation resources are 1) a Checklist for Sustainable Industrial Construction Job Sites, 2) a Quick Start Guide, 3) Two Maturity Models, and 4) an Industrial Sustainability Index Metric (ISIM).

Detailed information on the results of a survey that was conducted by a Research Team to determine the current state of sustainability in industrial construction is provided in the companion CII Research Report Number 250-11.

Chapter One provides a Checklist for Sustainable Industrial Construction Sites that could be used by industrial construction industry members to help assess the sustainability of their construction projects. Chapter Two includes two Sustainability Maturity Models that could be used by members of firms to evaluate their current level of sustainability and a Quick Start Guide that could be used to help start the implementation process for a sustainability program. Also included in this report is a pilot Industrial Sustainability Index Metric (ISIM) that was developed to provide a method for measuring the sustainability of construction materials as they move through the supply chain.
